1962

1962

Formed in 1962 by Joan Bailey who was our Founder, and it was known as “Manawatu Deaf Sport Club” There was a small committee of five people at that time.

Most of the time they would meet at Joan Bailey’s place for get together and the members starts to grow so they then start meeting at different places to accommodate the growing number of members.

1965

The name was changed by dropping out the word Sports and rename as Manawatu Deaf Club because they were unable to get support from charities if they remained under Sports as the public would not donate so it was decided to omit Sports from its title.

1974

The constitution Rule book was formed and it was the year that the committee were in favour of a new name change by becoming an Incorporated Society.

1975

Manawatu Deaf Society was approved as an Incorporated Society.

1988

A hall from the Linton Army became available and MDS was offered to take the hall for free as long they organise the cost for transporting the hall from Linton Army to Totara Road site owned by PNCC. MDS officially got their hall onsite on 16th May 1988.

1989

The clubroom was officially opened to the members.

1992

30 years Anniversary was celebrated in the clubroom.

2012

50 years Anniversary was celebrated in the clubroom.

2021

A new Constitution Rule was passed as the old constitution rule from 1974 was outdated for over 30 years.

2022

60 years Anniversary was celebrated.
